New Jersey Archbishop Preparing to Run St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ” The New Jersey-based archbishop appointed to serve as a temporary caretaker for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis is an Ivy League-educated attorney with working-class Rust Belt roots.

Archbishop Bernard Hebda, coadjutor bishop in the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, was appointed apostolic administrator of the Twin Cities archdiocese following the resignations of Archbishop John Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop Lee Piche. The announcement came just 10 days after charges were filed against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis for mishandling clergy sexual abuse allegations and "failing to protect children."

He was ordained as a priest in 1989 after working for a high-profile law firm in Pittsburgh.
