Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Transportation Department held its annual Worker Memorial Day Tuesday.

Events were held at four sites around the state, including Rochester.   Among the speakers were MNDOT Deputy Commissioner and Chief Engineer Sue Mulvihill, Mayor Ardell Brede and Chad Hockens, a MnDOT bridge maintenance worker whose Highway 52 work zone was the scene of a vehicle crash last year.

MNDOT’s events included 10 seconds of silence in remembrance of the 34 department employees and 15 private contractors who have died while working on Minnesota projects since 1960.

The event coincides with the beginning of the summer road construction season, which includes more than 300 state projects.
