LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — A Minnesota pilot was found dead after a small plane was reported missing in the La Crosse area.

Officials with the La Crosse Sheriff's Department say they got a call shortly after noon Thursday about a missing single engine propeller plane. By pinging the pilot's cellphone they were able to narrow the search to an area of four square miles.

The plane was found in a corn field near Holmen at about 6:15 p.m. The pilot was the only person on board and was dead.

Officials say pilot is from northern Minnesota and was scheduled to stop at the La Crosse airport before heading to Appleton.

The cause of the crash is unknown. Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to be on the scene Friday to investigate.
