Minnesota experienced the lowest number of traffic fatalities on record for the month of January last month.

The State Department of Public Safety says preliminary reports indicate 9 people died last month from injuries suffered in traffic crashes. The second lowest traffic death toll for the month occurred in January 2011 when 15 people were killed.

The record low death toll in January followed a year during which Minnesota experienced the second lowest number of traffic fatalities since the state began tracking the grim statistic in 1944.
