MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota woman working on her doctorate degree at the University of Georgia has been struck and killed while biking in Athens.

Police arrested the female driver of an SUV that hit 25-year-old Ashley Block and two other people biking with her Monday evening. One of the two other bicyclists is critically injured. The other suffered minor injuries.

The Star Tribune reports Block was a Ph.D. anthropology student from Minneapolis.

Authorities in Georgia say the SUV driver crossed the center line and struck the three bicyclists who were heading in the other direction. Block was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 31-year-old driver is jailed on possible charges of homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs, using her cellphone behind the wheel and endangering her 2-year-old passenger.
