Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) -  Public comment is being sought on a proposed large hog feedlot that would be built in Goodhue County, near Zumbrota.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says Circle K Family Farms wants to build the facility at a site located northeast of Zumbrota. It would accommodate up to 4,700 finishing hogs.

State law requires the MPCA to prepare an Environmental Assessment Worksheet on the proposal. State agencies use the worksheet to help determine if a more complete Environmental Impact Statement is needed. The EAW covers site location details, nearby resources and other elements, including wells, soil types, water use, manure management, air and odor emissions, and traffic.

The MPCA says the operation would produce an estimated 1.5 million gallons of liquid manure annually that would be stored in a concrete pit below the new barn. Plans call for the manure to be removed in the fall and injected into cropland as fertilizer. The manure application sites are cropland located within nine miles of the project in Zumbrota, Goodhue and Belvidere townships in Goodhue County.

The worksheet for this project is available on the MPCA's Environmental Assessment Worksheet webpage.  It’s also available by calling Kim Grosenheider at 651-757-2170.  Written comments may be sent via email to kim.grosenheider@state.mn.us, or mailed to her at the MPCA, 520 Lafayette Road N., St. Paul, MN 55155-4194.

The public may submit written comments on the proposal through 4:30 p.m.  Oct. 5.
