MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A federal bankruptcy judge says leaders of Twin Cities parishes can view confidential claims made by victims of alleged sexual abuse by priests.

Attorneys for parishes had argued the parishes identified in sex abuse claims need the information for insurance companies and to make informed financial decisions. But victims' lawyers said the more than 400 people who filed claims against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis were guaranteed confidentiality.

Bankruptcy Judge Robert Kressel had some reservations, but agreed with the parishes on Thursday. The Star Tribune reports that now leaders at about 50 parishes will be authorized to view claims involving clergy or former clergy at their church. All must sign confidentiality agreements.

The archdiocese filed for bankruptcy in January.
