Minneapolis (gophersports.com) - The Golden Gopher women's hockey team won its seventh WCHA Final Faceoff title and earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament with a 3-1 win over No. 1 Wisconsin Sunday.

Taylor Wente, Taylor Williamson, and Nicole Schammel scored goals for the Maroon & Gold and Sidney Peters made 31 saves on 32 shots faced to lead Minnesota (24-10-4).

 

After making 64 saves on 65 shots faced in two games this weekend, Peters was named the WCHA Final Faceoff's Most Outstanding Player, and Sydney Baldwin, Williamson, and Grace Zumwinkle joined Peters on the all-tournament team.

The Gophers last won the WCHA Final Faceoff in 2014, having won three-straight titles in 2012, 2013, and 2014; the Maroon & Gold also won WCHA postseason titles in 2002, 2004, and 2005.

 

Minnesota and Wisconsin will face off at 2 p.m Saturday in Madison in the NCAA  opening round.
