Fourth Minnesota Turkey Farm Hit by Deadly Flu
St Paul, MN (KROC AM News) - Another commercial Minnesota turkey farm has been hit by a deadly avian influenza strain that is creating more and more concern for the state’s poultry producers.
This one is located in Nobles County and is the fourth one confirmed by the US Agriculture Department in recent weeks. The farmer contacted the state after discovering some of the turkeys were dying or already dead. The site in southwest Minnesota had 21,000 turkeys and the remainder of the flock will be killed.
State officials continue to say the risk to the public is very low and there is no food safety concern. Minnesota is the top turkey producing state in the country and is feeling the effects of the spread of the flu strain. After the first case was reported, more than 40 countries banned all poultry imports from Minnesota. One was Mexico, the state’s largest buyer of turkeys.
