Mankato, MN (KROC AM News) -  A former police chief in southwest Minnesota has admitted trying to hire an underage girl to have sex.

Michael Zeug was police chief of the town of Walnut Grove when he was caught last June in an undercover operation aimed at men who were trying to hire underage prostitutes.

The 46-year-old Zeug was scheduled to go on trial this week but instead accepted a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to a felony prostitution count involving the hiring of a minor and will be sentenced in September. Under the plea deal, Zeug will be sentenced to a staggered 90 day jail sentence, pay a $1,000 fine and be on probation for up to two years.

Zeug was suspended after he was charged but resigned from his job in May.
