Fifth Minnesota Turkey Farm Hit by Deadly Flu Strain
Undated (KROC AM News) - The number of commercial turkey farms in Minnesota that have been hit by a deadly avian flu strain has grown to five.
On Thursday, the US Agriculture Department confirmed a second flock in Stearns County had been exposed to the deadly strain. The farm had 71,000 turkeys. That’s the second farm in Stearns County to be impacted.
Earlier Thursday, the department announced a farm in Nobles County in southwest Minnesota had been affected and 21,000 turkeys were killed. Officials say there is no known connection between the five affected farms.
The department says birds from the affected farms will not be allowed to enter the food system. The Centers for Disease Control says the risk to humans from the infections is low.
