St. Paul , MN (KROC-AM News ) - The Minnesota State Patrol has issued a request for the public’s help in identifying a vehicle that was hauling a wooden crate that broke free and seriously injured a person in another vehicle this past weekend.

The incident occurred late Saturday night on I-35 just north of the Twin Cities at Forest Lake. The State Patrol says the wooden crate ended up smashing through the windshield of a car driven by a 27-year-old St. Paul man. His passenger, 20-year-old Allonte Combs, suffered serious injuries and was transported to the North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the State Patrol 651-779-5900.

Failing to make sure your load is not safely secured is a violation of state law. The State Patrol offers these tips for making sure that items you transport don’t break free.

• When securing your load use ratchet straps, not twine or rope.
• If possible, cover your load with a secured tarp.
• If hauling a trailer, make sure your safety chains are connected.
