Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The developer behind the Discovery Square project in downtown Rochester has signed up another major tenant. The University of Minnesota-Rochester, which had previously expressed interest in leasing space in the nearly 90,000 square foot facility under construction along 4th Street Southwest, has signed long-term leases for almost 10,000 square feet of space in Discovery Square. In announcing the lease, Mortenson Construction indicated UMR would be using the new location for hooded laboratories, learning laboratories, and collaborative spaces.

UMR Chancellor Dr. Lori J. Carrell says the location of the new facility was a significant factor in the school’s decision to lease the space.

“Our mission as an innovative undergraduate health sciences university is greatly enhanced by our immersion in the Rochester community. UMR students are in the heart of the medical world and are able to learn and work alongside some of the foremost practitioners and leaders in health care research. Our presence in Discovery Square will enrich our students’ experience.”

The Mayo Clinic previously signed leases for about 33,000 square feet of space in the four-story Discovery Square complex, which is scheduled to open next year.
