EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say the man killed outside a suburban Twin Cities apartment complex exchanged gunfire with police before he died.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday said 37-year-old Justin Lee Kulhanek-Derks died of a gunshot wound to the head. It said the manner of death is pending further investigation.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says when officers arrived Sunday they approached Kulhanek-Derks on foot and were immediately fired upon. The BCA says two officers returned fire, striking Kulhanek-Derks. He was pronounced dead outside the building where he resided.

The two Eagan officers involved, Nathan Tennessen and Alison Burnstein, are on standard administrative leave. Authorities say they were not wearing body cameras. The investigation is still ongoing.
