Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The short-term future of Rochester’s Chateau Theater may be known in the near future.

The City Council Monday will discuss an administration recommendation to seek proposals that would “most significantly activate the building” over an expected 3-5 year period. During that time, the city is expected to develop a long-term plan for the historic downtown building.

The lease period would begin when ongoing renovations are finished, which is expected to be next spring or summer.

Staff is recommending proposals be submitted by Jan. 25 and a selection made in February. Staff says proposals “are welcome from existing City Departments and private, public, or other non-profit partners.”

The operator would be completely responsible for the building’s day-to-day expenses and programming costs.

Here is the summary of what the city is seeking from applicants:

Manage the day-to-day building operations of the Chateau Theatre in a cost-effective and high-quality manner
Work strategically to achieve a high level of activation of the building for events not to exceed 390 occupants
Create a vibrant entertainment, education, and cultural hub in the Heart of the city
Develop and implement strategies to engage with existing community groups and attract new partners and events
Support the city’s investment in Chateau Theatre through exercising the highest standard of maintenance and preservation of the building
