MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin has fired men's hockey coach Mike Eaves who led the Badgers program for 14 seasons.

Wisconsin had success under Eaves early in his tenure, but has struggled the past two seasons. The Badgers finished 8-19-8 with a loss to Penn State in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament Thursday.

Eaves helped Wisconsin win its sixth NCAA title in 2006. The Badgers also reached the NCAA championship game in 2010. The State Journal says fan support and attendance has dwindled at the Kohl Center lately. The 2015-16 season had the lowest average attendance in 18 seasons.

The 59 year old Eaves played for the former Minnesota North Stars from 1978- 1983.
