Area Judge, Former Rochester Attorney, Retires
Wabasha, MN (KROC AM News) - A former Rochester defense attorney who was later appointed a district court judge has retired.
Judge Terrence Walters officially retired Thursday. He was appointed by Gov. Jesse Ventura in 2003 and spent most of his career on the bench in Wabasha County.
Walters worked as a private attorney and public defender before his appointment.
His most notable case was the David Brom murders in Rochester in 1988.
Walters was assigned to represent the teenager in a case that attracted national attention. Two months later he took up another high-profile murder case - the stabbing death of a Rochester teenager. Walters represented Matthew Gore, who was charged in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Valerie Gunderson in the foyer of her home after she broke off their relationship.
Ironically, Walters’ father was a longtime lawman whose department was in charge of both murder investigations. Rodney Walters was Chief Deputy with the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office at the time of the killings.
Interviews of candidates for Walters’ seat were scheduled to take place Friday.
