Jays hammer Royals

UNDATED (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays staged a pair of big rallies to get within two games to one of the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series.

Held to no homers and just three runs in the first two games, the Jays belted three home runs in an 11-8 win over the Royals in Toronto on Monday night. The Blue Jays took the lead in the second inning before erupting for six runs in the third to make it 9-2.

Ryan Goins sparked the Jays' three-run second by hitting a two-run single and scoring on Josh Donaldson's single. Troy Tulowitzi padded Toronto's lead with a three-run homer before Donaldson added a two-run blast later in the third. Goins, Tulowitzki and Donaldson each had three RBIs, with Goins adding a solo shot in the fifth.

Tulowitzki wasn't around for the end of the game. He was given a rare playoff ejection for arguing balls and strikes before the top of the eighth.

Royals leadoff hitter Alcides Escobar was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Ben Zobrist had three hits and scored three times, and Kendrys Morales was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer that capped the scoring.

Blue Jays starter and winning pitcher Marcus Stroman lasted 6 1/3 innings, yielding four runs and 11 hits.

Royals starter and loser Johnny Cueto was chased in the third inning, charged with eight runs on six hits and four walks.

Game 4 of the series in Tuesday afternoon in Toronto. A pair of 11-game winners and former Mets teammates will square off as Chris Young pitches for the Royals against R.A. Dickey.

The Mets and Cubs got a day off before playing Game 3 of the NL Championship Series at Wrigley Field tonight. Chicago dropped the first two games in New York and will start Kyle Hendricks against Jacob deGrom in the third game.

Norris kept playing after cancer diagnosis

DETROIT (AP) — Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris says he kept pitching this year despite learning he had a cancerous growth on his thyroid. The 22-year-old Norris said the growth was deemed malignant, but he was told by a doctor that he could wait until the end of the season to have it removed. Norris went 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA in 13 starts for Toronto and Detroit.

Jays try to rein in the rowdies

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have banned the sale of canned beer in the upper deck at the AL Championship Series after fans threw them on the field during a ruckus earlier in the playoffs. Instead, beer will be poured into plastic cups.

The Blue Jays made the change after some fans reacted to a ruling on a bizarre play in the seventh inning of Game 5 in the Division Series against Texas by pelting the field with cans.

Former Cy Young winner retires

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Former American League Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito  has retired, making the announcement through an article he wrote for "The Players' Tribune." The 37-year-old said last month that he planned to retire and turn his attention to his other interests.

Zito went 165-143 with a 4.04 ERA in parts of 15 big league seasons, which also included seven years with the San Francisco Giants. He captured the 2002 AL Cy Young Award after going 23-5 with a 2.75 ERA.

Eagles whip Giants

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NFC East has produced 12 Super Bowl champions since the 1971 season, but the division currently has no teams with a winning record.

The Eagles share first place with New York at 3-3 following their 27-7 pounding of the Giants in Philadelphia. The Eagles gave up the game's first touchdown but won easily despite four turnovers.

DeMarco Murray had his most productive game since joining the Eagles last spring, rushing for 109 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries. Murray's 12-yard scoring run put Philadelphia ahead 24-7 in the third quarter.

Nolan Carroll returned one of Eli Manning's two interceptions for a 12-yard TD early in the second quarter to break a 7-7 tie.

Sam Bradford hit Riley Cooper for a 32-yard TD in the first quarter, shortly after Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had a 13-yard touchdown reception on the opening series. Bradford had an uneven game, completing 24 of his 38 passes for 280 yards, one TD and three interceptions.

Manning threw for just 200 yards and failed to get the Giants into the end zone in the final 55 minutes. New York managed just 251 total yards the entire game.

The two teams combined for seven turnovers and 21 penalties.

Manziel could face NFL discipline for domestic dispute

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Johnny Manziel's roadside argument with his girlfriend could lead to punishment from the NFL.

Browns coach Mike Pettine says that the league is investigating the high-profile backup quarterback's domestic dispute last week. Manziel was questioned by police in Avon, Ohio, after his girlfriend claimed he was physical with her when the two had a heated disagreement while driving on an interstate highway.

Colleen Crowley can be heard telling police on a dash-cam video that Manziel was physical with her, saying "he hit me a couple times." Manziel was not arrested. Crowley, who police said appeared intoxicated, did not press charges.

UNDATED (AP) — An MRI exam shows Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota sprained his left MCL during Sunday's loss to Miami. Tennessee coach Ken Whisenhunt says they will have to see how the rookie's knee progresses before determining if he can play Sunday against Atlanta.

Whisenhunt said that Mariota was walking around just fine at the Tennessee headquarters on Monday.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— The Seattle Seahawks are lifting the suspension of fullback Derrick Coleman imposed after he was arrested following a car crash. Coleman could play Thursday night against San Francisco, but coach Pete Carroll said the fullback has yet to be examined by team doctors following his involvement in the crash. Coleman was suspended last week after his arrest for investigation of vehicular assault and hit-and-run.

— Lions running back Zach Zenner is going on injured reserve with cracked ribs and a partially collapsed lung. Coach Jim Caldwell says that Zenner was in the hospital after being injured in Sunday's overtime win over Chicago. Caldwell said Zenner would go on IR "at some point in time" but that his condition was improving. Zenner has 60 yards on 17 carries this season.

— Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa has been suspended four games without pay by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy. The suspension stems from an incident last year when Enunwa was arrested for simple assault on his girlfriend at a New Jersey hotel. Domestic violence charges were later dropped in the case. Enunwa is eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on Nov. 13 following the team's game against the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 12.

— A person familiar with the situation says the New Orleans Saints have decided to make a change at kicker, releasing Zach Hocker and replacing him with Kai Forbath. Hocker missed two field goal attempts during Thursday night's Saints victory over Atlanta, dropping him to 9-of-13 on the season. Forbath had kicked for the Washington Redskins from 2012 until his release last month and has made 60 of 69 field goal attempts in his career.

Rangers blank Sharks

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Rangers hosted the lone NHL game of the night and ended a three-game losing streak.

Antti Raanta made his Rangers debut and picked up his fourth career shutout in a 4-0 win over San Jose. Raanta turned back 22 shots and outplayed Martin Jones, who allowed four goals after yielding just two in his first four games this season.

Marc Staal scored the game's first goal and set up Viktor Stalberg's insurance tally with 3:16 remaining. Rick Nash assisted on Mats Zuccarello's power-play goal, but he still hasn't scored in seven games this season.

The Sharks now return home following a 2-2-0 road trip.

Cavs' James resting up for regular season

CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James sat out Cleveland's final preseason game against Dallas on Monday night, but Cavaliers coach David Blatt said the four-time MVP will be ready when the regular season opens next week.

James had an anti-inflammatory injection in his back last week and hasn't played since Oct. 12. The Cavs are winless in the preseason.

The Cavs open the regular season Oct. 27 against Chicago. Blatt says James "absolutely will be ready" for that game.

Pistorius out of prison, under house arrest

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African official says Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison and placed under house arrest.

A spokesman for South Africa's correctional services department said the double-amputee Olympic runner who fatally shot his girlfriend on Valentine's Day 2013 was put under "correctional supervision" on Monday night.

He confirmed Pistorius' release from a prison in Pretoria, the South African capital, in a cellphone text message sent to The Associated Press.

Pistorius has served nearly a year of his five-year sentence for manslaughter.
