Lowry leads in third round

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP)— Shane Lowry, who climbed into contention and fell back, is back on top when play resumes early this morning at the 116th U.S. Open at Oakmont. The Irishman is at 5-under par, good for a two-shot lead over little known Andrew Landry.

Lowry is through 14 holes on his third round. Landry has completed 13. They will join many golfers early today to finish their third round before the start of the final round.

Landry, the 624th-ranked player in the world playing his first major, is at 3 under. The long-hitting Dustin Johnson is three shots off the lead along with Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood.

World Number 1 Jason Day will start today six shots off the lead. Officials are still hoping to complete the tournament on Father's Day -- barring an 18-hole playoff.

US OPEN-MISSED CUT

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — The demanding Oakmont course has taken its toll on some of the top names in golf. Now that the second round of the U.S. Open is over the list of players who missed the cut is a who's who of the game. For example, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Rickie Fowler.

LPGA-MEIJER CLASSIC

Two-way tie for the lead

BELMONT, Mich. (AP) — Defending champion Lexi Thompson and In Gee Chun share the lead after three rounds of the Meijer (MY'-ur) LPGA Classic. Each is 15-under-par with Sei Young Kim a shot back.

Warriors' Iguodala will play

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Golden State Warriors forward Andre Iguodala (ih-goh-DAH'-lah) says he plans to play in Game 7 of the NBA Finals Sunday night despite a bad back that limited him the previous game. Iguodala played 30 minutes in Game 6 on Thursday night as he spent time in the locker room getting treatment after his back "locked up." He said the injury stemmed from the long flight and heavy workload he has had in the playoffs.

Orioles end Jays' 4-game streak...Shields bombed again

UNDATED (AP) —Jonathan Schoop went 3 for 4 with a home run, Yovani Gallardo and three relievers shut down the torrid-hitting Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles ended Toronto's four-game winning, 4-2.

Manny Machado also had three hits for the first-place Orioles, who improved to 25-12 at Camden Yards.

In the rest of the Saturday baseball:

— Mike Napoli homered during a five-run first inning as the Cleveland Indians became the latest team to tee off on James Shields, routing the Chicago White Sox 13-2. Rookie Tyler Naquin homered, got three hits and drove in a career-high four runs. Juan Uribe also homered for Cleveland. Shields, who was making his third start since being traded from San Diego to the White Sox, was tagged for eight runs on seven hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings.

— Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and David Ross homered to back Jon Lester and lead the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The major league-leading Cubs improved to a season-high 26 games above .500 at 46-20. The Pirates lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

— The placement of closer Jonathan Papelbon on the disabled list may have hurt the NL East-leading Washington Nationals last night. Backup reliever Felipe Rivero inherited a 3-1 lead in the eighth but gave up six runs and made a throwing error that allowed the San Diego Padres to beat the Nats 7-3.

— The Atlanta Braves nipped the New York Mets 4-3. The Braves scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Addison Reed in the eighth.

— The World Series champion Kansas City Royals used a 20-hit attack to maul the Detroit Tigers 16-5. Kendrys Morales drove in five runs with four hits. Paulo Orlando also had four hits.

— The L.A. Dodgers hit three home runs and outscored Milwaukee 10-6. Justin Turner, Howie Kendrick and Joc Pederson all went deep for the Dodgers.

— Ian Desmond drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cap a two-run ninth-inning rally and the Texas Rangers overcame a late three-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3. The AL West-leading Rangers have won five in a row.

Joe Panik had four RBIs, including a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the ninth inning that sent the San Francisco Giants to their seventh straight win, 6-4 over the Tampa Bay Rays.

— Tim Lincecum has made a winning return to the majors. The ex-Giants fireballer is restarting his career after nearly a year away with six sharp innings to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Oakland Athletics 7-1.

— Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. homered, Rick Porcello pitched six solid innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 6-2. Bogaerts, who entered the day leading the American League in batting, also had a single while raising his average to .352.

— Giancarlo Stanton singled in his first three at-bats to give his batting average a boost to .210, and the Miami Marlins totaled 17 hits while beating the Colorado Rockies 9-6.

— George Springer hit an RBI single in the 11th inning to give the Houston Astros a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

— Jacoby Ellsbury hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the ninth inning as the Yankees beat the Twins 7-6. The Yankees scored three times in the ninth to take a 7-4 lead before closer Aroldis Chapman gave up back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the inning. New York's Alex Rodriguez also slammed the 695th home run of his career.

— Zack Greinke won his seventh straight start by pitching three-hit ball for eight innings as the Diamondbacks beat the Phillies 4-1. Greinke, who is 10-3, got home run support from Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb and Nick Ahmed.

Cowboys roll in opener, meet Arizona next

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A rough start turned into a smooth finish for Thomas Hatch.

The Chicago Cubs' third-round draft pick threw a complete game and extended his shutout streak to 26 innings in Oklahoma State's 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the College World Series.

Hatch struggled early before settling in to record the first shutout by the Cowboys at the CWS since 1986,

Oklahoma State plays Monday against Arizona, which beat Miami 5-1 last night.

Datsyuk leaving Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — Veteran Pavel Datsyuk is on his way home to Russia. After a long career with the Detroit Red Wings, the 37-year-old says it's time to head home and play in the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League. Datsyuk was a 1998 draft by pick by the Wings and was on two Stanley Cup championship teams, in 2002 and 2008.

In other hockey news:

— Defenseman Sami Vatanen has re-signed with the Anaheim Ducks after agreeing to a four-year, $19.5 million deal. He had nine goals and a career-high 29 assists last season and will be the Ducks' highest-paid defenseman next season, making $5 million in each of the next three seasons.

IOC-RUSSIAN DOPING

IOC offers full support for IAAF decision to ban Russians

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The IOC says it "welcomes and fully supports" the decision by the IAAF (I-double-A-F), the governing body of track and field, to ban Russia's track and field team from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics because of widespread doping. The IOC says it "fully respects" Friday's ruling by the IAAF to maintain its suspension of the Russians.

The statement appeared to rule out any chance of the IOC seeking to amend the IAAF decision.

F1-EUROPEAN GP

Rosberg takes pole in Baku

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — Nico Rosberg has claimed pole position for Sunday's European Grand Prix after his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton crashed out of qualifying. Qualifying was red-flagged when Hamilton clipped his right front wheel on a wall. He qualified 10th.

Force India's Sergio Perez was second but will take a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox after also hitting a wall at the end of pre-qualifying practice and severely damaging the rear of the car.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo qualified third ahead and with the penalty on Perez will start second.

COPA AMERICA

US gets Argentina in semis

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) —Those soccer fans wishing for a Team USA-Argentina matchup are getting what they hoped for. Lionel Messi scored and added two assists in his first Copa America start this year to lead Argentina over Venezuela 4-1 and into a semifinal against the host United States.

Messi's goal in the 60th minute gave Argentina a 3-0 lead and was his 54th in international play, tying the national record set by Gabriel Batistuta, according to Argentina's governing body. The Barcelona star also took over the Copa America scoring lead with his fourth goal of the tournament.

Argentina now has two days to rest before playing the U.S. in Houston on Tuesday night. The Americans have been off since beating Ecuador on Thursday.
