UNDATED (AP) — No major league team was better than the San Francisco Giants at the All-Star break. And no team has been worse since then.

The Giants are 15-29 following the break after they struggled to get a hit off Jon Lester in a 2-1 loss to the Cubs in Chicago. Lester's bid for a second career no-hitter ended when Hunter Pence homered with two out in the eighth. It was the Giants' first in 40 at-bats since the third inning of Thursday's loss at Wrigley Field.

Lester settled for a complete-game three-hitter and improved to 15-4 with a 2.61 ERA. He received support in a two-run third as David Ross hit an RBI double and scored on Dexter Fowler's single.

The Cubs won their fifth in a row, moved a season-high 40 games over .500 and reduced their magic number to 13 for clinching the NL Central.

The Giants remain two games behind the NL West-leading Dodgers, who were 4-2 losers to San Diego. Yangervis Solarte (yahn-HEHR'-vihs soh-LAHR'-tay) snapped a 2-2 deadlock with a solo homer in the eighth inning to help the Padres overcome Joc Pederson's solo shot and two RBIs. Howie Kendrick singled four times for the Dodgers, who out-hit the Padres 13-6.

Cabrera and Justin Upton each homered as the Tigers stayed tied with the Orioles for the final AL wild-card berth.

— Alex Cobb pitched well in his first major league game since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, giving up two runs and four hits while fanning seven over five innings of Tampa Bay's 8-3 rout of Toronto. The Rays led just 4-2 in the seventh until Luke Maile and Brad Miller sandwiched home runs around Kevin Kiermaier's RBI triple. Logan Morrison also went deep for the Rays.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-SOUTHERN CAL-INVESTIGATION

Two Trojans reportedly under investigation

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California has sent linebacker Don Hill home from Dallas amid reports that he is being investigated by police.

A search warrant and affidavit from Los Angeles County Superior Court obtained by ESPN, TMZ and the Los Angeles Times say Hill is under investigation for sexual assault. He was supposed to play for the 20th-ranked Trojans in their season opener Saturday against No. 1 Alabama. The team said only that Hill had violated team rules.

The court documents show it's the same investigation that is looking into Trojans linebacker Osa Masina, who did not make the trip to Texas due to what the team cited as a violation of team rules. The documents allege that Masina and Hill assaulted the woman at Hill's off-campus apartment on July 14 after giving her marijuana, Xanax and alcohol.

The documents say Masina also shot the assault on video and sent it to the victim's ex-boyfriend.

Masina alone assaulted the same woman in his home state of Utah on July 26, according to the documents.
