MELBOURNE (AP) — Angelique Kerber has upset Serena Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win the Australian Open title, ending the six-time champion's unbeaten streak in finals at Melbourne Park.

Williams was an overwhelming favorite at the Australian Open, where she had won all six previous times she'd reached the final, and was trying to equal Steffi Graf's Open-era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

For the second time in as many majors, though, she fell short. Williams won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles in 2015 before losing to Roberta Vinci in the U.S. Open semifinals.

The 34-year-old Williams hadn't lost a set in the first six rounds here until dropping the first on Saturday night against No. 7-seeded Kerber, who was playing in her first major final.

Cavs outscore Pistons

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers have ramped up their offense since losing their first game under new coach Tyronn Lue (TY'-rahn loo).

Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving and LeBron James all scored at least 20 points as the Cavaliers won their third in a row, 114-106 in Detroit. Love scored 19 of his 29 points in the first half, while Irving finished with 28 points. James added 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Cleveland, which has averaged 114 points during its winning streak.

James also surpassed the 26,000-point mark, becoming the youngest player to do so at 31 years, 30 days.

The Cavaliers top the Eastern Conference by 2 ½ games over Toronto and lead the Central Division by seven games over Chicago.

In other NBA action:

— Russell Westbrook registered his sixth triple-double of the season, registering 26 points, 14 assists and 10 boards as Oklahoma City beat Houston 116-108. Kevin Durant poured in 33 points and had 12 rebounds, while Enes Kanter provided 22 points off the bench in the Thunder's third consecutive win.

— Chris Paul scored 27 points and three other Clippers scored at least 15 points off the bench to lead a 105-93 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Austin Rivers delivered 17 points, Lance Stephenson had 16 and Jamal Crawford added 15 as the Clippers dealt the Lakers their ninth consecutive loss.

— The Celtics picked up their season-high fifth straight win as Kelly Olynyk (oh-LIH'-nihk) and Marcus Smart scored 16 points apiece in a 113-94 rout of Orlando. Olynyk scored nine points in the fourth quarter and helped Boston open the period on a 22-4 run to break the game open.

— Chandler Parsons had 19 points and a season-high 10 rebounds as Dallas dumped Brooklyn 91-79. Mavericks guard Deron Williams struggled in his first game against his former team, finishing with eight points on 3 of 14 shooting.

— Miami was a 107-103 winner at Milwaukee behind Dwyane (dwayn) Wade's 24 points and seven assists. Chris Bosh delivered 20 points, six boards and five assists for the Heat, who shot 50 percent in their third straight win.

— Rodney Hood scored 22 points and Derrick Favors had 20 in his return to the starting lineup to carry Utah past Minnesota 103-90. The Jazz trailed by one before scoring the last 14 points of the third quarter.

— Damian Lillard dropped in 22 points and Allen Crabbe came off the bench to add 20 as Portland picked up its third consecutive win, 109-91 against Charlotte. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist started at forward for the Hornets and finished with 13 points and seven rebounds in his first game since missing nearly four months with a shoulder injury suffered in Charlotte's first preseason game.

— Carmelo Anthony returned from a two-game absence to deliver 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in New York's 102-84 rout of Phoenix. Arron Afflalo scored 12 of his 17 points in the first quarter for the Knicks, who ended a four-game skid and handed the Suns their 13th consecutive road loss.

Spanos says Chargers staying in San Diego this year

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers are staying put for at least one more season.

Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos says the team will play in San Diego in 2016, and he'll work with politicians and the business community to try to resolve a long, bitter battle over a new stadium.

Spanos says he's "committed to looking at this with a fresh perspective and new sense of possibility."

Spanos' statement was posted on the team website shortly after a report said the Chargers had reached a deal to join the Los Angeles Rams in a stadium expected to open in Inglewood in 2019.

The development was a relief to fans who feared the Chargers would leave their home of 55 seasons and join the Rams in Los Angeles this fall.

NFL-CONCUSSIONS

Concussions increased in 2015

UNDATED (AP) — The number of concussions in the NFL this season rose 58 percent to the highest number in any of the past four years. According to the NFL, there were 182 reported concussions from 2015 regular-season games, reversing a recent downward trend. There were 115 in 2014, 148 in 2013, and 173 in 2012.

A year ago, the league touted those decreases as a reflection of players changing the way they play football.

NFL Senior Vice President of Health and Safety Policy Jeff Miller says the league is trying to figure out why concussion numbers rose so much this season.

Chiefs give extension to tight end

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (KEHL'-see) has signed a five-year, $46 million extension that includes $20.5 million guaranteed.

The former third-round draft pick of the Chiefs was entering the final year of his rookie contract. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound tight end has started 27 of the 33 games he's played over three seasons, catching 139 passes for 1,737 yards and 10 touchdowns.

NFL-PACKERS-RODGERS

QB has knee surgery

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has told ESPN.com that he had knee surgery days after Green Bay was eliminated from the playoffs. Rodgers told ESPN.com that he was "doing well" and "recovering on schedule."

Rodgers was on the injury report for one week this season for a sore right shoulder in Week 11. His 92.7 passer rating was his lowest since taking over as the starter in 2008.

Deals in LA, KC and NY

UNDATED (AP) — A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press the Los Angeles Dodgers and free-agent second baseman Howie Kendrick have agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract. Kendrick batted .295 with nine home runs and 54 RBI last season after being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels in December 2014. The 32-year-old infielder had turned down a $15.8 million, one-year qualifying offer from the team in November.

In other baseball news:

— Pitcher Ian Kennedy and the Kansas City Royals have finalized a five-year, $70 million package that was agreed to nearly two weeks ago. The 31-year-old right-hander went 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA for the Padres last season. He is four years removed from a 21-win campaign with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

— New York Mets second baseman Neil Walker has agreed to a one-year, $10.55 million contract, avoiding arbitration. Walker batted .269 with 16 homers and 71 RBIs last season for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who traded him to New York last month for left-hander Jonathon Niese (NEES).

— Pitcher Robbie Ross and the Boston Red Sox have worked out a deal to avoid salary arbitration. The one-year pact is worth $1.25 million. A 26-year-old left-hander, Ross was 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 54 relief appearances last year. He was Boston's last player in arbitration.

— Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt (voht) is expected to be fully healed by opening day after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. Vogt had dead tissue and a bone chip removed from the elbow joint. Vogt was an All-Star for the first time last season before finishing the year hitting .261 with 18 homers and 71 RBIs in 136 games.

— Lefty Jake Diekman and the Texas Rangers have avoided salary arbitraiton by working out a one-year, $1.255 million contract. Diekman was acquired last season from Philadelphia along with ace Cole Hamels and went 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 26 appearances with Texas.

— Maicer Izturis (MY'-sur ihz-TOOR'-ihs) has agreed to a minor league contract to stay with the Toronto Blue Jays. The switch-hitting Izturis has a .269 career big league batting average with 39 homers and 334 RBIs over 11 seasons. He missed last year following shoulder surgery and hasn't played in the majors since April 2014.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NOTRE DAME

New deal for the coach

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame has rewarded football coach Brian Kelly with a new six-year contract. He has already coached the Irish for six seasons, the longest tenure of any Notre Dame coach since Lou Holtz led the team for 11 seasons.

Kelly is 55-23 at Notre Dame for a winning percentage of .705. He led the Irish to an undefeated regular season in 2012 before losing to Alabama 42-14 in the title game. The Irish have appeared in six straight bowl games.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS-MICHIGAN

New AD for Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — University of Connecticut athletic director Warde Manuel has accepted the same job at his alma mater, Michigan. The 47-year old has agreed to a five-year deal after four years as the Huskies' AD.

Like football coach Jim Harbaugh, Manuel played his college football at Michigan under Bo Schembechler (SHEM'-bek-lur).

PGA TOUR

Woodland and Choi tied for the lead

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Gary Woodland and K.J. Choi are co-leaders at 9-under through two rounds of the PGA's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego. Woodland fired a 5-under 67 on the North Course, while Choi carded his 67 on the South Course, giving each a one-shot edge over Dustin Johnson. Phil Mickelson and defending champion Jason Day are among those who missed the cut.

LPGA TOUR

Khang has share of lead in LPGA rookie debut

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Megan Khang shot a 5-under 68 for a share of the lead through two rounds of the season-opening Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic. The 18-year-old Khang eagled the par-5 fourth hole and had four birdies as she tries to earn a victory in her first LPGA start. She's tied with Charley Hull and Haru Nomura at 8-under.
