Longhorns outlast Irish

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Associated Press top-25 football poll will look quite a bit different when it is released Tuesday. Notre Dame became the third top-10 team to fall this weekend, joining third-ranked Oklahoma and No. 5 LSU.

Tyrone Swoopes scored on a lunging 6-yard touchdown run in the second overtime to give Texas a 50-47 victory over the 10th-ranked Irish. Freshman Shane Buechele (boo-SHEHL') got the start at quarterback, but Swoopes played a huge role in Texas' running game with two scores and big runs that punished Notre Dame defenders in OT. Buechele threw for 280 yards and a pair of long touchdowns as the first freshman quarterback to start a Longhorns season opener since Bobby Layne in 1944.

Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer rallied the Irish from a 31-17 deficit in the third quarter and finished with 215 yards passing and five touchdowns.

Blue Jays win, Happ missed 18th

UNDATED (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have entered Labor Day in sole possession of first place in the American League East, one game ahead of the Boston Red Sox.

Russell Martin provided a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning to push the Blue Jays past Tampa Bay 5-3. Martin was 0-for-3 before completing the Jays' comeback from a 3-1 deficit. He has provided nine home runs and 24 RBIs in his last 24 games.

Toronto avoided a three-game sweep despite a poor performance by J.A. Happ, who was reached for three runs on six hits and two walks over just 2 2/3 innings. Happ was trying to become the majors' second 18-game winner, joining Boston's Rick Porcello.

The Red Sox absorbed a 1-0 loss at Oakland despite holding the A's to a pair of hits. Bosox starter Eduardo Rodriguez had a no-hitter until Marcus Semien singled on a play that was originally ruled an out before it was reversed following a manager's challenge.

Danny Valencia scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth after Brady Holt misplayed a double by Khris Davis.

In other major league action:

— Baltimore had blanked the Yankees in two straight games before Chase Headley and Austin Romine drove in two runs apiece to lead New York's 5-2 triumph over the Orioles. Headley and Romine did their damage while the Yanks were building an early 4-0 lead off Wade Miley, who allowed nine baserunners over five innings. The outcome leaves the Orioles three games behind the AL East-leading Blue Jays and moves them back into a tie with Detroit for the final AL wild-card berth.

— The Tigers blew a 4-1 lead in the seventh before Justin Upton belted a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to send Detroit past the Royals 6-5 in Kansas City. Upton also laced an RBI double and has seven home runs and 18 ribbies in his last 14 games. J.D. Martinez also went deep for the Tigers, who still trail the AL Central-leading Indians by 5 ½ games.

— Cleveland scored three times off Fernando Rodney with two out in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 6-5 thriller against Miami. Jose Ramirez tied it with a two-run single before Lonnie Chisenhall's single completed the Indians' sixth consecutive victory. Ramirez had four hits and Jason Kipnis drove in a pair for the Indians.

— Texas still has a magic number of 17 for clinching the AL West following the Rangers' 7-6 loss to the second-place Astros. George Springer smacked a solo homer and had two RBIs to help the Astros beat the Rangers for only the third time in 16 meetings this season. Evan Gattis (GAT'-ihs) also homered after the Astros reached Yu Darvish for five runs and seven hits in just four innings.

— Yasiel Puig (pweeg) belted a three-run homer and the Dodgers stretched their lead in the NL West to three games over San Francisco by knocking off the Padres 7-4. Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH'-nee grahn-DAHL') snapped a 4-4 tie with an RBI single in the fifth before crushing a two-run homer in the seventh to cap the scoring. Jose De Leon picked up the victory in his major league debut, striking out nine but yielding four runs and six hits in six innings.

— The Giants suffered a 3-2 loss to the Cubs on Jason Heyward's RBI single in the bottom of the 13th. Heyward delivered three RBI singles for Chicago, including the game-tying hit in the ninth. John Lackey gave up just one earned run and one hit in five innings as the Cubs dropped their magic number for clinching the NL Central to 11 over St. Louis.

— Randal Grichuk (GRIH'-chuhk) and Kolten Wong homered to back Carlos Martinez in the Cardinals' 5-2 win over Cincinnati. Martinez took a shutout into the seventh inning and improved to 13-7 while helping the Redbirds end a three-game skid. St. Louis also scored twice in the sixth on an errant pickoff attempt and a wild pitch, both by Cincinnati reliever Jumbo Diaz.

— Seth Lugo was sharp in the New York Mets' 5-1 verdict over Washington, limiting the NL East leaders to a run and six hits in seven innings. Curtis Granderson belted a two-run homer and had three RBIs as the Mets took the rubber match of the three-game series to stay one game behind St. Louis in the battle for the final NL wild-card berth. Jay Bruce also homered in the Mets' 11th victory in 15 games.

— Milwaukee crushed Pittsburgh 10-0 to drop the Pirates 3 ½ games out of an NL wild-card berth. Jonathan Villar (vee-LAHR') broke it open with a grand slam in the sixth to support Jimmy Anderson, who worked five innings and combined with three relievers on a six-hitter. Domingo Santana homered twice and Chris Carter went deep to help the Brewers complete a three-game sweep and deal the Pirates their sixth straight loss.

— Albert Pujols (POO'-hohlz) and C.J. Cron (krohn) hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning of the Angels' 4-2 downing of Seattle. Six relievers combined to shut down the Mariners after starter Matt Shoemaker was hit in the head with a line drive in the second inning. The Angels announced Shoemaker was alert and responsive after suffering a laceration on the right side of his head.

— Socrates Brito smashed a tiebreaking, three-run homer and Brandon Drury had three RBIs as Arizona downed Colorado 8-5. Archie Bradley gave up two runs and six hits in six innings for the Diamondbacks.

— Tim Anderson's two-run double in the 12th inning gave the Chicago White Sox a 13-11 victory at Minnesota. Anderson supplied the deciding hit after teammate Jose Abreu (ah-BRAY'-oo) launched a pair of three-run homers and collected seven RBIs.

— Atlanta has a six-game winning streak following homers by Matt Kemp and Freddie Freeman in a 2-0 shutout of Philadelphia. Julio Teheran struck out seven over six innings and lowered his ERA to 3.01.

MLB-DODGERS-KERSHAW

Kershaw set for Friday start

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is set to make his return to the rotation Friday at Miami after spending more than two months on the disabled list with a herniated disk.

Manager Dave Roberts says Kershaw won't have a specific pitch count, but the team will be looking at the big picture with the playoffs coming up next month.

Kershaw was 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA before getting injured in late June.

MLB-PADRES-RAMIREZ

Padres cut Ramirez

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The San Diego Padres have released former All-Star shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who was hitting .240 with five homers and 41 RBIs in 128 games.

The last-place Padres signed Ramirez as a free agent this past offseason. He played his first eight years with the White Sox, batting .273 with 109 homers.

TENNIS-US OPEN

Sock falls to end US men's hopes

NEW YORK (AP) — For the fifth straight year there will be no American in the U.S. Open men's quarterfinals.

Jack Sock was the last hope for the U.S. until he was dispatched by ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (joh-WIHL-freed SAHN'-gah), 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Sock seemed poised to end the U.S. quarterfinal drought when he upset former Open champ Marin Cilic (CHEE'-lihch) in straight sets during the third round on Friday, never facing a break point. But Sunday was a different story as he had just five aces and was broken six times by Tsonga.

The top men's seed also advanced to the quarterfinals. Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) capped the schedule at Arthur Ashe Stadium by topping Kyle Edmund, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.

Fourth seed and two-time champion Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL') was upset in the fourth round by 24th-seeded Lucas Pouille (pwee-AY') of France, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. Nadal had dropped just 20 games in winning his first three matches in straight sets. Pouille won the 4-hour, 7-minute match and ended Nadal's latest bid for his 15th Grand Slam.

Pouille's victory helped put three men from France into the quarterfinals of the Open for the first time in 89 years.

Tenth seed Gael Monfils (GAY'-ehl mohn-FEES') reached the quarterfinals with a straight-sets victory against Marcos Baghdatis.

On the women's side, No. 8 Madison Keys was knocked out by unseeded Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee), 6-3, 6-4. Wozniacki committed only seven unforced errors as she continues a comeback from a dismal season filled with injuries and poor results.

Wozniacki is joined in the quarterfinals by second seed Angelique Kerber, seventh seed Roberta Vinci and Anastasija Sevastova, who knocked off 13th seed Johanna Konta. Kerber was a 6-3, 7-5 winner against No. 14 Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIH'-toh-vah).

NFL-MOVES

Cowboys sign Sanchez

UNDATED (AP) — The Cowboys have signed Mark Sanchez to back up rookie starting quarterback Dak Prescott.

Sanchez accepted a one-year pact a day after he was released by Denver. Tony Romo remains on the active roster amid uncertainly on how long he will be out with a broken bone in his back sustained in a preseason game.

If the Cowboys place Romo on the injured reserve-return list, he will miss the first seven games. If not, he can return sooner.

In other news:

— Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has passed his physical and will return to practice Monday. He's expected to be ready for Houston's opener against Chicago on Sept. 11. Watt missed all of training camp and the Texans' four preseason games after surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in July.

NASCAR-DARLINGTON

Truex takes another holiday race

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. is becoming the master of holiday weekend NASCAR races.

Truex has won the Southern 500 at Darlington, taking the lead with 28 laps to go and holding off Kevin Harvick on the final restart. Truex started the summer season by leading an astounding 588 of 600 miles to win at Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend.

Harvick led 214 of 367 laps but was hampered by slow pit stops.

Kyle Larson was third, followed by Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano.

INDYCAR-WATKINS GLEN

Dixon wins from pole

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Scott Dixon has won the IndyCar race at Watkins Glen International.

The pole sitter claimed his 40th victory overall, moving the New Zealander to fourth place on the career list.

Josef Newgarden was second, followed by Helio Castroneves (EHL'-ee-oh cas-troh-NEHV'-us), Conor Daly, and Sebastien Bourdais (bohr-DAY').

Simon Pagenaud (see-MOHN' PAH'-jeh-noh) finished seventh and increased his lead over Will Power to 43 points in the championship standings with one race remaining in the season. Power crashed just past the midpoint of the race and finished 20th.

FORMULA ONE-MONZA

Rosberg holds off poor-starting Hamilton

MONZA, Italy (AP) — Nico Rosberg won the Italian Grand Prix after Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton wasted pole position with a poor start.

Hamilton got off the line at the same time as the other cars but immediately fell behind, dropping to sixth before the first corner. He climbed his way back to finish second.

Rosberg's second straight victory and seventh of the season cut Hamilton's championship lead to two points with seven races remaining.

GOLF-DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP

Casey takes lead

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Paul Casey carded a birdie and an eagle over the last three holes for a 5-under 66 and a three-shot lead going into the Labor Day finish at the PGA's Deutsche (DOY'-chuh) Bank Championship.

His approach on the par-5, 18th rolled to within 30 inches to set up an eagle that put Casey at 15-under.

Brian Harman had a 68 to land in second place, one shot ahead of PGA champion Jimmy Walker, Kevin Chappell and Smylie Kaufman.

LPGA-MANULIFE CLASSIC

Masson rallies to win

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario (AP) — Germany's Caroline Masson had nine birdies on the way to a 5-under 67 that gave her a one-shot win at the Manulife LPGA Classic. It is the first tour win for the 27-year old.

Tied for second were France's Karine Icher (EE'-chur), Minjee Lee of Australia and South Korea's Mi Hyang Lee.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS-SHAW CHARITY CLASSIC

Franco rolls to victory

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Carlos Franco shot a second consecutive 7-under 63 to win the PGA Tour Champions' Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary.

Franco finished 18-under par to beat Michael Allen and Bernhard Langer by two shots. Allen also closed with a 63, while Langer finished with a 64.
