Curry leads Warriors to the verge

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Golden State Warriors are one victory away from their first NBA title in 40 years.

The Warriors moved to the verge of the NBA championship by posting their second straight victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers 104-91 behind a 37-point effort by Stephen Curry. Curry scored 17 points in the fourth quarter when he made five of seven shots. At one point late in the game, Curry scored seven straight to put away the game after Cleveland got within eight points in the final 2 minutes.

As Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, "He took over the game down the stretch."

Draymond Green added 16 points and nine boards for Golden State. Andre Iguodala  had a great floor game for the Warriors with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists -- despite going two of 11 from the free throw line.

LeBron James has posted his second triple-double of the playoffs with 40 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. Tristan Thompson added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Cleveland.

James moved past Michael Jordan into 10th place on the career list in postseason minutes in this game. Jordan, a six-time champion, played 7,474 minutes in the playoffs. James is a two-time champion playing in his fifth straight NBA Finals.

The Warriors can wrap things up Tuesday night when the series shifts back to Cleveland. Should a seventh game be necessary it will take place next Friday in Oakland.

Nearly perfect Scherzer...11 straight for the Blue Jays

UNDATED (AP) — Max Scherzer has shown why the Washington Nationals laid out the big money for his services. The former American League Cy Young Award winner struck out a team-record 16 and pitched a one-hitter in the Nationals 4-0 win over Milwaukee.

Scherzer lost his bid for a perfect-game on a bloop single that barely fell in during the seventh inning. Carlos Gomez got Milwaukee's only hit, leading off the seventh with a broken-bat looper to right field. Scherzer set a career high for strikeouts and broke the Washington mark of 14 set by Stephen Strasburg in his big league debut in 2010. He walked one and finished the day with a 1.93 earned run average.

In other baseball:

—The Toronto Blue Jays have put themselves squarely in the middle of the race for supremacy of the American League East. The Jays have won 11 straight with the most recent win coming over the Red Sox in Boston, 13-5. Ryan Goins led the way at the plate with a homer, double and five runs batted in. Danny Valencia also homered as the highest-scoring club in the majors completed a sweep at Fenway Park and sent Boston to its season-worst sixth straight loss. This is the fourth time Toronto has won 11 in a row, most recently in 2013. The Blue Jays can set the team mark Monday night when they visit the New York Mets

— Sonny Gray lowered his ERA to a major league-best 1.60 with 7 2-3 impressive innings and the Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-1. Eric Sogard drove in three runs and the A's capitalized on three errors.

— Baltimore's six game winning streak is over. The Orioles were beaten by the Yankees 5-3 as John Ryan Murphy had the Yankees' only hit in a three-run fifth inning, a two run bases loaded double in the fifth. Mark Teixeira drove in a run and scored one to help the first-place Yankees get the win.

— Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox is the first pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 2001 to strikeout 12 or more batter in four straight starts. Despite that he was the loser against Tampa as the Rays won 2-1. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer off Sale in the seventh inning lifting the Rays to the win for a three-game sweep. The loss leaves Sale with a 6-3 record.

— The Mets trailed the Braves by five runs but roared back for a 10-8 win for their biggest comeback victory of the season. The Mets, who continue to lead the National League East, rode the home run to the victory as they banged out four. Jeurys Familia got four outs for his 19th save in 20 tries.

—Josh Harrison singled home Neil Walker with two outs in the 11th inning to lift the Pirates to a 1-0 win over the Phillies. Walker singled off Jonathan Papelbon to start the late rally which led to the Pirates fourth straight win. Pittsburgh has swept six series this season, the most of any team in the majors.

— Jorge De La Rosa is now the winningest pitcher in Colorado Rockies history. He pitched seven innings as the Rockies beat the Marlins 4 -1, avoiding a four-game sweep. De La Rosa allowed four hits and one run to lower his earned run average to 4.91 as he improved to 73-47 with the Rockies, surpassing Aaron Cook, who went 72-68 for Colorado.

— Miguel Cabrera once again tagged Corey Kluber and the Indians, hitting a booming home run and leading Detroit to an 8-1 win over Cleveland. Cabrera hit his 14th homer, a solo drive in the fourth inning that went an estimated 450 feet. The two-time AL MVP is 20 for 35 with five homers in his career against Kluber, the reigning Cy Young Award winner, who has lost three straight. Cabrera loves Cleveland pitching as he went 7 for 11 in the series with a pair of homers and six RBIs.

— Byron Buxton went 0 for 4 in his major league debut, but scored the winning run in the ninth inning to lift the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers. Buxton reached on a fielder's choice and scored from first base one out later on Eddie Rosario's double to center.

— The L.A. Dodgers doubled up San Diego 4-2 in 12 innings. Adrian Gonzalez drove in the go-ahead runs with a bases-loaded single in the 12th.

__ Rubby De La Rosa took an eight-hitter into the ninth, and the Arizona Diamondbacks chased Chris Heston after five innings in his first start coming off a no-hitter and beat the San Francisco Giants 4-0. Heston pitched his gem against the New York Mets on Tuesday in his 13th major league start.

— Rookie Lance McCullers and four relievers combined for a two-hitter and Evan Gattis tied a career high with four hits as the Astros cruised to a 13-0 win over Seattle.

__ In the Sunday night game at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs Starlin Castro drove in a run in the bottom of the 11th to edge the Cincinnati Reds 2-1. The Cubs took three of four in their weekend series. Speedster Billy Hamilton had a career-high five stolen bases for the Reds.

— The Kansas City at St. Louis game was postponed because of rain.

Tribe brings up top prospect

DETROIT (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have added top prospect Francisco Lindor to the roster and placed designated hitter Nick Swisher on the 15-day disabled list. The infielder's contract was purchased from Triple-A Columbus, where he hit .281 with 22 RBIs in 58 games. Lindor was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2011 first-year draft.

Swisher has inflammation in his left knee. He's hitting .198 with two homers and eight RBIs in 30 games.

In other baseball news:

— To complete a trade from last December the San Diego Padres are sending top prospect Trea Turner to the Washington Nationals. The shortstop, who was selected 13th overall by San Diego in the June 2014 draft, was part of a three-team trade that sent 2013 AL Rookie of the Year Wil Myers from Tampa to the Padres. Nationals prospects Steven Souza and Travis Ott went to Tampa Bay, and Washington acquired right-hander Joe Ross and a player to be named.

A rainy day in Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Kurt Busch was declared the winner of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. The race was called on lap 139 because of heavy rain. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second.

INDYCAR

Newgarden takes first

TORONTO (AP) — Josef Newgarden took the lead on the 72nd of 85 laps and held on to capture the Honda IndyCar Toronto race. The win is his second of the IndyCar season. Teammate Luca Filippi was second 1.4 seconds behind, followed by Helio Castroneves in third as drivers battled wet conditions early as well as in the latter stages of the race.

"McDreamy" has a big finish

LE MANS, France (AP) — Actor Patrick Dempsey finally got on the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, finishing second in the GTE Amateur category on Sunday. The 49-year-old American, a long-time star of "Grey's Anatomy," was one of three drivers in the Dempsey-Proton Porsche 911 RSR team. They finished behind the winning Ferrari.

Dempsey is a huge motorsports fan and was driving Le Mans for the fourth time, but this was his first top-three finish.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

Horned Frogs win on Day 2

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) —TCU routed LSU 10-3 on the second day of the College World Series in Omaha. Preston Morrison, an eighth round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs, limited LSU to five hits and a run in seven innings.

In the second game, Cal State Fullerton was leading Vanderbilt 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth when rains came. That game will be resumed at Noon Eastern on Monday.

In case you missed the results from Saturday, Virginia beat Arkansas 5-3 and Florida destroyed Miami 15-3.

GOLF-SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Langer defends his title

BELMONT, Mass. (AP) — Bernhard Langer is dominating the Champions Tour and other senior events. He is now the first man since Arnold Palmer 30 years ago to win the Senior Players Championship in two straight years. Langer wound up 19-under-par after a final round 3-under-68 to finish six shots in front of Kirk Triplett to win in Belmont, Massachusetts.

PGA-ST. JUDE

Gomez lands the big check

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Fabian Gomez of Argentina won his first PGA Tour title by finishing first in the St. Jude Classic, beating England's Greg Owen by four strokes. Gomez started the round tied with Owen atop the leaderboard at 9 under with 23 players within four strokes. Gomez shot 4-under 66 to take home the winner's check of $1.08 million.

WOMEN'S PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Park wins

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Inbee Park was the winner of the Women's PGA Championship, the second major of the LPGA season. She shot a final round 5-under-68 to finish 19-under par, five shots in front of fellow South Korean Sei Young Kim. American Lexi Thompson was third at 12-under.

Park has now won the event three straight years and has regained the No. 1 world ranking.
