Murphy, deGrom, Familia send Mets into NLCS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs were bitter rivals when both were in the National League East. They will resume that rivalry this weekend.

The Mets are in the National League Championship series after Daniel Murphy, Jacob deGrom and Jeurys Familia led them to a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers in Game 5 of the division series in Los Angeles. Murphy had three hits and helped the Mets earn their second comeback win of the series. DeGrom managed to hold off the Dodgers following a rough first inning, and Familia worked two perfect innings of relief to close it out.

Murphy contributed to every Mets run while going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. The second baseman opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first and delivered a tiebreaking, solo homer in the sixth off losing pitcher Zack Greinke to put New York ahead to stay. He hit .333 with three home runs and five RBIs in the series.

Murphy's hustle sparked the tying rally in the fourth. He drew a base-on-balls before going from first to third on a walk to Lucas Duda. Murphy made his dash to third for a stolen base after noticing no one on the bag with the Dodgers in a right-field shift against the lefty-hitting Duda. He came around to score the tying run on Travis d'Arnaud's sacrifice fly.

DeGrom put the Mets behind 2-1 in the first inning by surrendering four consecutive singles, including RBI hits by Justin Turner and Andre Ethier. The Mets' ace labored in each of his first five innings of work but left the game with a 3-2 lead after allowing six hits and three walks in six frames.

DeGrom was 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 20 strikeouts over 13 innings in the series.

Noah Syndergaard struck out two in a scoreless seventh, five days after pitching 6 1/3 innings in Game 2. He handed off to Familia, who completed the first six-out save of his career by striking out A.J. Ellis and Howie Kendrick.

Turner had at least one hit in each game of the series, including a division-series record six doubles. The Dodgers third baseman finished with a series-high .526 average.

Ethier had a heated exchange in the dugout in the third inning after the right fielder hit a popup to left with Turner on second. According to Mattingly, Ethier was angered by an umpire's call and took out his displeasure on the manager, who was trying to settle him down. Mattingly said the argument was "nothing between us."

The Mets will open their championship series against the Cubs Saturday in New York. Matt Harvey is expected to start the opener for the Mets. Cubs skipper Joe Maddon says Jon Lester will pitch Game 1, followed by Jake Arrieta on Sunday.

Maddon also said that shortstop Addison Russell will not play in the series because of a strained left hamstring.

MLB-SECURITY

MLB to review Blue Jays security

UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball will review security at Toronto's Rogers Centre in an effort to prevent a repeat of the fan disturbance during Game 5 of the Blue Jays' AL Division Series win over Texas.

Spectators littered the field with debris during an 18-minute delay Wednesday. Toronto catcher Russell Martin hit Texas batter Shin-Soo Choo with his seemingly simple return throw to the pitcher, which resulted in a go-ahead run for the Rangers after several conferences and an umpire's review. Toronto scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to win 6-3.

In a statement, MLB called the fans reaction "a major source of concern."

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina is having ligament surgery on his left thumb and should be ready for spring training. Molina was hurt making a tag play in Chicago on Sept. 20, causing him to miss the rest of the regular season and Game 4 of the NLDS. General manager John Mozeliak says Molina is expected to be restricted from baseball activities for two to three months.

— The Astros have postponed a planned renovation of center field at Minute Maid Park. The plan would have removed Tal's Hill and shortened the distance from the plate to center field from 436 to 409 feet. Houston said its playoff run coupled with an international cricket match in November affected the construction timelines.

Nevada shuts down fantasy sports sites

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada regulators have ordered daily fantasy sports sites like DraftKings and FanDuel to shut down, saying they can't operate in the state without a gambling license.

The decision comes amid growing backlash by investigators and regulators over the sites, which have grown in popularity in the past year.

DraftKings and FanDuel say the sites provide games of skill and not of chance. They believe they are protected by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act established in 2006, which has language protecting fantasy sports.

Pistorius to go on house arrest

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius can leave prison and move to house arrest next week.

A parole board at the prison where Pistorius has served nearly a year of his five-year sentence for manslaughter made the decision. It came after an initial ruling to release the double-amputee athlete in August was canceled.

Pistorius was convicted of shooting his girlfriend to death in 2013.

Pistorius was acquitted of murder last year in the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp, but prosecutors have appealed that decision and will seek a murder conviction again at South Africa's Supreme Court on Nov. 3.
