MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — One of the Olympic gold medals won by the American "Miracle on Ice" hockey team in 1980 is being auctioned off.

It's being sold by Mark Pavelich, who was a Minnesota collegiate player when he helped Team USA beat the Soviets on the way to the gold medal. He's selling his medal through Heritage Auctions, with online and email bidding.

The auction company says Pavelich isn't in any financial distress -- he just wants to help out his kids. Bidding starts at $62,500.

Team USA, made up of amateur and collegiate players and coached by the late Herb Brooks, defeated the heavily-favored Soviet Union in the Olympics at Lake Placid, New York.

The Star Tribune says one other gold medal from the team has been auctioned. Mark Wells sold his to a private buyer for $40,000. The buyer auctioned it in 2010 for about $310,000.
