ST. MICHAEL, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say an off-duty Elk River police officer was among two men shot and killed in a home in St. Michael.

A young man is being held in the Saturday night killings.

Elk River Mayor John Dietz said officer Todd Besser was killed in what he called "a domestic type" incident.

The Star Tribune reports Besser was a 16-year veteran of the force.

Elk River Police Chief Ron Nierenhausen tells the Star Tribune that Besser had "just gotten done with work about 6 p.m." and the shooting "took place within 45 minutes."

The name of the other victim was not released.

Jail records show the suspect is 21 years old and lives at the house where the killings occurred. The suspect surrendered to authorities at a convenience store in Monticello.
