Caledonia, MN (KROC-AM News) - A careless driving conviction stemming from a fatal crash has resulted in a sentence of one year on probation for a Houston man.

50-year-old Randall Hongerholt, who pleaded guilty to the careless driving count and two other misdemeanor offenses earlier this week, has also been finding $300.

He was driving a semi-truck on a rural road in June of last year when 10 large hay bales fell off his trailer as he was a rounding a curve on a rural Houston County Road. One of the hay bales, which weighed 1200 pounds, smashed into a pickup truck that was headed in the opposite direction.

The smaller vehicle ended up crashing into the ditch and catching fire. The occupants, Dale and Teresa Erickson of Houston, suffered fatal injuries.
