MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 17-year-old boy is in custody in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter in Minneapolis.

The child's biological father, Max O'Neill, says doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center told him his daughter, Sophia O'Neill, had suffered a ruptured kidney and pancreas and died of internal bleeding. O'Neill shared custody of the girl with the child's mother.

O'Neill tells the Star Tribune he had previously seen injuries to his daughter, suspected abuse and reported it to authorities. The 22-year-old O'Neill says he last saw his daughter in April.

Police and paramedics responded to a call for a child not breathing at a Minneapolis residence around noon Wednesday. The toddler was rushed to the medical center and later died.
