Former nurse William Melchert-Dinkel admitted he went online and encouraged two people to kill themselves.  The Faribault man served almost six months in jail.

The appeals court heard oral arguments last Thursday on Melchert-Dinkel's 2014 conviction of assisting the suicide of a British man 10 years ago and attempting to assist the suicide of a Canadian woman.  She killed herself in 2008.

The case has lasted several years, involved two previous trials and two appeals that narrowed Minnesota's assisted suicide law.
