Snowstorm Closes Schools, Affects Travel in Rochester Area
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester schools and dozens of other districts across southeast Minnesota were closed Wednesday due to the latest snowstorm to hit the region.
Although major highways and roads were open, the morning commute was affected by the wet snow that began falling Tuesday night. Rochester Public Transit announced it was running its normal schedule but says delays are possible due to the weather.
Forecasters had predicted the storm would drop 6 - 10 inches of snow across the region and they were right on.
The National Weather Service reported several cities with mid-morning totals in excess of 6 inches, including Stewartville where 10 inches had been recorded before 9 a.m. As of 6:30 a.m, the total at the Rochester airport was 7 inches. About half of that fell before midnight.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation had its snowplows out early but many roads across southeast Minnesota were reported completely snow-covered as of 10 a.m. The State Patrol and other public safety agencies were busy dealing with traffic mishaps through much of the morning.
Snow is expected to continue into Wednesday evening.
