Shop With a Cop Until You Drop
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Wondering what was up with all those cops at the north Rochester Walmart store on Saturday?
They were there to help dozens of Rochester-area kids do their holiday shopping. It was the 15th annual Shop with a Cop program organized by the Rochester Police Activity League.
More than 70 officers from the Rochester Police Dept, Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol took part this year. They paired up with 80 kids and walked through the aisles of the store selecting gifts. Each child is given a $115 gift card to use to buy gifts for themselves and family members. They were also treated to lunch and ice cream, toured police vehicles and given K-9 demonstrations.
The goal of Shop with a Cop is to provide kids in need the opportunity to have a brighter Christmas and at the same time promote positive relationships between police officers and area youth.
About 800 children and their families have taken part since the event began and the gift card total has risen to nearly $100,000.
The event is sponsored by Canadian Honker, City Auto Glass, Rochester Police Benevolent Association, Olmsted County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Culver’s.
