ST. PETER, Minn. (AP) — A patient in the state's sex offender treatment program in St. Peter has been charged with assaulting a counselor.

The Mankato Free Press reports prosecutors charged 46-year-old Dennis Lee Whitley Jr. with third- and fourth-degree assault in Nicollet County District Court on Friday.

Whitley has been committed as a sexually dangerous person. According to a criminal complaint, a security counselor in the program went to Whitley's room on Wednesday with a report detailing a rule violation. Whitley told the counselor to leave. He then began yelling the counselor.

He then punched the counselor in the face and kicked him twice. The counselor reported blurred vision and said he temporarily lost consciousness. He said he had no memory of being punched or kicked.
