Minneapolis (Learfield News Service) - The Minnesota Twins have optioned struggling slugger Miguel Sano to Class A Advanced Fort Myers.

Manager Paul Molitor said Thursday Sano has been fighting an uphill battle all year following offseason shin surgery. The Twins also optioned outfielder Jake Cave to Triple-A Rochester with Joe Mauer expected to return from the disabled list Friday.

Sano took part in last year's Home Run Derby as a member of the American League All-Star team but has had a rough 2018 season.  As of Thursday his batting average was barely over .200 (.203) and he only had seven home runs and 27 RBIs in 37 games. He has also struck out 66 times.
