Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester woman is facing charges connected to a traffic crash that occurred Wednesday morning during a thunderstorm, while she was allegedly driving drunk with a 4-year-old child in her vehicle.

Police Captain John Sherwin says 34-year-old Lowanda Hicks is also accused of causing the crash by driving through a red light at the intersection of North Broadway and 7th Street and failing to have the young child secured in a safety seat.

Police reports indicate an officer on patrol came upon the collision involving two minivans around 5:30 a.m. No one was seriously hurt, but the 36-year-old Rochester man driving the second minivan was shook up and the young boy in Hicks’ vehicle was treated at the scene for knee pain.

Captain Sherwin says he was placed in protective custody, while Hicks was taken into custody on suspicion of Criminal Vehicular Operation and an enhanced DUI charge.
