Rochester Under Wind Chill Warning

A wind chill advisory for the Rochester area has been upgraded to a wind chill warning.

The National Weather Service has included Olmsted County in a wind chill warning that will be in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday through noon on New Year's Day. Nearly the entire state is covered by the warning, with the exception of counties on the far eastern edge of Minnesota, including Houston, Winona and Wabasha Counties. Those counties and most of Wisconsin currently remain under a wind chill advisory.

Forecasters are predicting the mercury will slide into the teens below zero for a third straight night in Rochester and most of southeastern Minnesota. Wind chill values were mainly in the -20 to -35 range early Sunday and could reach -40 or colder by Monday morning.

The unofficial morning low at the Rochester Airport Sunday morning was 15 below zero after hitting minus 14 early Saturday. It was over twice as cold in parts of northern Minnesota, where the town of Big Fork reported a morning low of -36. It hit -35 in Ely and -32 in International Falls. 

The National Weather Service issued a statement reminding anyone with New Year's plans that frostbite to exposed skin can occur in as little ass 10 to 30 minutes. If you need to be outside, be sure to dress in multiple layers and take steps to protect yourself in the event of an emergency.
