It seems our vocabulary is expanded every time MNDOT Mike visits the KROC-AM study for one of his regular appearances on Rochester Today with Tracy McCray and Andy Brownell.

On Wednesday morning, MNDOT District 6 Public Affairs Coordinator Mike Dougherty brought along District 6 Traffic Engineer Nancy Klema, who introduced Tracy, Andy and the audience to "mumble strips." Klema says the strips are designed to create less noise than the traditional "rumble strips" that are used along the shoulders of many Minnesota highways, while still providing enough vibration to alert a driver that his or her vehicle is drifting out of the traffic lane. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is planning to use them on the center line of Highway 42 when the roadway is resurfaced from Eyota to Plainview this summer.
