The Legal Eagle, David Shulman, appeared Monday on Rochester Today with Andy Brownell on KROC-AM. David always has useful information for people navigating the legal system dealing with legal issues.

On Monday’s show, one of the callers was desperate for help in dealing with the mass caused by the unauthorized use of her credit card. She had previously called about the creditors hounding her to pay for purchases that she did not make. Now, she has found her credit has been damaged and some of the perks she enjoyed because she is a person who pays her bills, including a card offering discounts on dental services, have been canceled.

It’s a nightmare scenario that is affecting more and more people as identity theft and credit card fraud becomes more and more rampant. The Better Business Bureau has some advice for victims of identity theft. Citing materials published by the Federal Trade Commission, the BBB recommends:

  • Placing an initial fraud alert with any of the three major credit reporting agencies.
  • Monitor your credit report.
  • Report the fraud or theft to the authorities.

Additional advice and resources can be found at the Better Business Bureau website and the Minnesota Commerce Department.

The Legal Eagle is a regular guest on Rochester Today and usually appears the second Monday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m.
