Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - An approaching storm system could create difficult travel conditions in southeastern Minnesota on Monday.

The National Weather Service has expanded a winter weather advisory to include the Rochester area. Forecasters were previously expecting most of the precipitation in the southeastern corner of Minnesota to fall as rain, but now say colder air could produce icy conditions on roadways as early as Monday morning

The Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 6 am through 6pm with a wintry mix of precipitation expected, including freezing rain, sleet and snow. Expect very slick conditions to develop on untreated roads.  In areas west of I-35, a winter advisory has been posted from midnight through 6pm on Monday. Forecasters says south-central and southwestern Minnesota can expect a couple inches of snow and freezing rain, while 3 to 5 inches of snow is predicted just north of the Twin Cities.

Areas of northern Iowa are covered by a freezing rain advisory, while northeastern Minnesota is under a winter storm warning because the storm could deliver a foot of snow to parts of that region.

The storm will be followed by a blast of arctic air that will result in sub-zero morning lows by mid week. The highs on Wednesday and Thursday are only expected to be in the low single digits above zero.
