Washington, D.C. (KROC-AM News) - Rochester seventh grader Lucas Eggers made it to the finals, but failed to advance to the top three in the 2016 National Geographic Bee.A question about the frequency of strong earthquakes led to his elimination in the first round of the finals on Wednesday.

A press release from National Geographic says this year’s first-place prize went to Rishi Nair of Florida, who will take home a $50,000 college scholarship. The second-place finisher was from Massachusetts, while the third place winner represented Alabama. By surviving the preliminary round of the competition to become one of only 10 contestants in Wednesday’s finals, Eggers was awarded $500.

It was Egger’s second trip to Washington D.C. to represent Minnesota in the national competition. He also won the state contest in 2014, but was knocked out of the national competition in the preliminary round.
