Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester City Council is scheduled to vote Wednesday evening on two noteworthy road projects.

One involves the reconstruction and improvement of Viola Road between 11th Avenue NE and East Circle Drive. Work is not scheduled to begin until 2019 but the Council is expected to act tonight on a recommendation to award a $385,000 engineering contract for the project. It has an estimated cost of $4.3 million.

Work on the other project is expected to begin this year.

The Public Works Department is recommending the Council award the bid for the 16th Street SW traffic control improvement project. Rochester Sand and Gravel submitted the low bid at $2.6 million. The estimate for the project was more than $2.7 million. Olmsted County is responsible for 75 percent of the cost.

The project calls for the installation of traffic control lights at the intersection of 16th Street and Mayowood Road. The lights are expected to be operational next year. There will be other improvements between South Broadway on the east and Salem Road on the west, including a complete reconstruction of the 16th Street/Apache Drive intersection.
