Repeat Rochester Domestic Assaulter Gets Probation

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man is being given a chance to stay out of prison for his convictions on charges stemming from two crimes involving women who were held against their will and repeatedly assaulted.

37-year-old Samuel Carlson was given a three-year prison term that was stayed by the court while he serves 5 years on probation and spends a year in jail, although that portion of his sentence will be shortened by the time he’s already served while his case was pending before the court. He will also be eligible for an earlier release if he enters into an inpatient chemical dependency treatment program.

Carlson became front-page news last July after he was accused of repeatedly assaulting his estranged girlfriend while he held her against her will inside her home. Carlson was arrested after he fell asleep and she managed to escape and call 911. In that case, ended up pleading guilty to a 3rd-degree felony assault charge and a 5th-degree drug count, while four other felony charges, including 1st-degree aggravated robbery and 2nd-degree assault, were dropped.

The second assault case occurred while he was free on bail and resulted in his conviction on a felony domestic assault charge. Once again, he was accused of assaulting a woman being held against her will, who also escaped and sought help after Carlson fell asleep.

His stayed prison sentence also covers Carlson’s conviction on five felony charges for violating domestic abuse no contact orders that were filed against him last December.
