Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  The agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Rochester Park Board includes a proposed agreement with the Rochester Swim Club involving the city’s two outdoor public swimming pools.

The proposal would have the swim club assume responsibility for managing and programming activities at the Silver Lake and Soldiers Field swimming pools. That would include hiring and paying the lifeguards and other staff. The club would offer traditional open swim hours during the summer season, and would also coordinate several special events at the pools, while providing games and activities during the regular pool hours.

The Parks Department would continue to provide maintenance and provide the chemicals and equipment needed for water treatment in the swimming pools. Under the proposed agreement, the Parks Department would cover operational losses up to $10,000, and the department and the swim club would evenly share in covering losses above that amount. If the club manages to turn a profit, it would keep 70 percent of the proceeds.

The proposed agreement was developed during meetings between the swim club and the Parks Department, which has been working to find ways to continue operating the pools while revenues and attendance decline and maintenance costs increase.
