Plea Agreement for College Student’s Murder
Hastings, MN (KROC-AM News) - A man already serving a life sentence for a murder conviction has pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge stemming from the death of a University of Minnesota student in September 2013.
33-year-old Shavelle Chavez-Nelson entered into a plea agreement on Friday in Dakota County Court that calls for a 17 year prison term that will run concurrently with his existing life sentence for the murder of a man outside a bar in Burnsville several hours before 20-year-old Anarae Schunk was killed. Chavez-Nelson, who was seen leaving the bar with the young woman, admitted stabbing her nearly two-dozen times at a home in Rosemount.
Schunk’s body was found 8 days later in a ditch along a road in Rice County.
Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom says the negotiated settlement of this case was agreed upon with the support of Anarae’s family who had expressed a desire to negate any additional trauma to family and friends that may have resulted from a trial.
