Pine Island, MN (KROC AM News) -  A Goodhue County Sheriff’s Deputy forced open the door to a burning apartment unit in Pine Island this morning and led a 47-year-old man to safety.

A spokesperson for the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Department says Robert Bartholmey reported the fire in his second floor residence around 5:30 a.m., shortly before the owner of the downtown Pine Island building called and reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the top floor of the structure.

The deputy was the first to arrive at the scene, and forced his way into the second floor apartment after he was informed a person was still inside. Bartholmey was transported to the Olmsted Medical Center to be checked out.

His apartment sustained severe fire and smoke damage, while the Thrivent Financial office on the first floor of the building had smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
