Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Stewartville woman who was hit by a car in Rochester Friday was declared brain dead that evening and her family decided to donate her organs.

Police say 47-year-old Karlys Koens was starting to cross 2nd St SW near the Sargent’s store around 6:45 AM when she was hit.

Police Lt. Mike Sadauskis says Koens was struck by an eastbound car driven by 38-year-old Nicole Alexander of Rochester. Sadauskis says investigators determined Koens was in the pedestrian crosswalk and a car in the right lane stopped to allow her to cross the street just before she was hit by Alexander’s vehicle, which was in the left lane. Alexander told police she did not see Koens, who was thrown about 20 feet. As of Monday morning, the accident remains under investigation.

Koens' family set up a CaringBridge site in her honor.
