MINNETONKA, Minn. (AP) — Two construction workers are hospitalized after a trench they were digging collapsed in Minnetonka.

City spokeswoman Kari Spreeman says the men were working on a road reconstruction project when the dirt gave way around 10 a.m. Monday.

KARE-TV reports one man was covered in dirt and the other was buried in soil up to his waist. Both were rescued and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Spreeman tells the Star Tribune one worker is in "moderate" condition while the other is in "very serious" condition.

The men are contract workers for the city and not city employees.

The Department of Labor and Industry will investigate.
