Lawrence, KS  (KROC AM News) - The Rochester School District came close to possibly losing its leader Tuesday night.

Superintendent Michael Munoz was one of three finalists for the same job in Lawrence, Kansas. The Lawrence School Board met Tuesday night to hire one of the three and it must have been a tough decision. It took eight hours before the board voted unanimously to offer the job to one of its assistant superintendents.

Rochester School Board Chair Gary Smith was a guest on Rochester’s Good Morning on KROC-AM Wednesday morning and said Munoz informed the board several weeks ago about a possible relocation. Smith says Munoz had indicated he was looking at opportunities in the Kansas City area so he could be closer to his daughter who recently married.

Smith said the district “is fortunate to have Mike as our superintendent, but we also understand his desire to be closer to his family.”

Munoz has been Rochester’s superintendent since 2011 and remains under contract through the next school year.
