Minneapolis, MN (Learfield)  --  It took a 28-yard field goal by Emmit Carpenter with 10 seconds to go for the Minnesota Gophers to avoid an ugly loss on their 2016 Homecoming game Saturday.

The kick was good and the Gophers beat Rutgers 34-32.  Minnesota (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) had built a 21-3 lead in the first period, but watched it melt away until the game was on the line.

Rodney Smith rushed 22 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns -- one on a 94-yard kickoff return.  Quarterback Mitch Leidner returned to the lineup and connected on 11-of-18 passes for 156 yards.  He also ran two yards for a first-quarter score and gave up a pick-six.
