St. Paul, MN (Learfield Wire Services) - Minnesota State Lottery Director Ed Van Petten has resigned, after the Star Tribune found that he received reimbursement from the state for staying in his own timeshare unit while traveling.

Van Petten told Minnesota News Network “we never gained anything,” he thought it was an opportunity for employees to enjoy a nice property and always took reimbursement lower than what it cost him. “I see now that the appearance is not good and I’ve resigned my position as a consequence,” Van Petten said early Friday afternoon.

He says he was not asked to resign — that he decided to do it because he doesn’t want to cause the governor any problems at all. Van Petten says the governor is “a wonderful guy and been great to work with.”
