Undated (Learfield Wire Service) - Minnesota civic leader and sports enthusiast Wheelock Whitney Junior has died.

He was 89. Whitney ran as a Republican for U-S Senate in 1964, losing to Eugene McCarthy. He also ran for Governor of Minnesota in 1982, losing to Rudy Perpich.

Whitney was a part-owner of the Vikings through the 80s and 90s, and was heavily involved in the push to bring the Washington Senators to Minnesota, where the name of the team was changed to the Twins.

Family members say Whitney died in hospice care at his home.

Governor Dayton says Whitney was a “dear family friend and was “an outstanding and influential civic leader throughout his life.”
